Apply for a grant

Our grantees are at the forefront of the climate movement. Find out if your project is eligible before you apply.

Climate Emergency Fund primarily supports three types of grantees:

In countries with an under-developed climate movement ecosystem, we support groups who execute bold, high-stakes, actions that capture the public imagination, push the climate crisis to the top of the agenda, and force society to re-evaluate how we're addressing this crisis.

In countries with a well-developed climate movement with a healthy disruptive flank, we look to support groups who are capable of organizing large-scale disruptive climate protests with mass participation - building toward exponential growth.

We also support elements of movement infrastructure that allow the movement to operate at maximum effectiveness. These include large-scale training programs, technological or financial infrastructure, or network-building projects of multiple groups.

what we fund

  • Groups focused on climate action
  • Groups building multi-racial, cross-class people power
  • Groups that use disruption in their strategy and tactics
  • Groups that provide direct support for movements utilizing disruption, by providing press support, trainings, movement networking, digital infrastructure, or skilled consulting

What we do not fund

  • Groups that do not center climate disruptive protest
  • Litigation or bail funds
  • Conservation projects
  • Art installations, song development, theater or film projects
  • Political campaigns or other non-501(c)(3) eligible work
  • Illegal activities

How do we prioritize projects?

For all applicants, we assess likelihood of success, vetting the following: organizing experience and expertise among core leaders; a bold, imaginative vision of society that can build large public support; a well-thought-out organizing strategy; volunteer-driven structures to move work forward; strong connections to the larger movement ecosystem; and healthy internal cultures.

Across all grantmaking categories, we prioritize supporting multi-racial, cross-class organizing, including high-impact Indigenous- and BIPOC-led groups, as well as groups in the Global South fighting on the front lines of climate catastrophe.

Information for Applicants

Our grants typically range from $25,000-$85,000.

We strongly recommend applying for less than $100,000.

Climate Emergency Fund requires documentation that demonstrates legal nonprofit status for the organization receiving the funds, as well as a bank account to receive funds. Grantees may receive funds directly or use a fiscal sponsor.

For U.S.-based organizations, we require an IRS designation letter for the grantee or its fiscal sponsor.

For international organizations, we require the relevant nonprofit certification documents for the grantee or its fiscal sponsor.

Any grantee using a fiscal sponsor will also need to upload a fiscal sponsor agreement or memorandum of understanding.

Applicants will be notified of their proposal’s status 2-6 weeks after submitting.
